US Snooping Scandal & Internet Privacy

Date:

The world is shocked to learn about the US snooping scandal that triggered a massive debate on Internet Privacy and breach of fundamental rights of the individuals. The recent reports of US agencies secretly accessing the users’ data raise a big question over the Internet privacy of billion of users across the globe.

US-Snooping-ScandalAccording to latest report leaked in media, the US government has been accessing the data and emails of users for the past six years. The internet giants like Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, and Apple have given the National Security Agency (NSA) and FBI direct access to their servers to collect all kinds of data, including emails, voice over IP calls of millions of users all over the world.

US President Barack Obama defended the country’s digital surveillance programme PRISM saying the government collects the call log data of every American in the US. Even though the tech firms denied their involvement in any programme that would give the US government or any others direct access to the information stored in their data centers, the cat is out of the bag.

Several other reports have suggested that the country was engaged in massive data surveillance. The European countries, which have stricter data privacy laws than the US, have expressed their concern over their users’ privacy.

The reports confirmed that India was the fifth most monitored country by the National Security Agency (NSA). After a massive national outrage, India has lodged a strong complaint with the US government and sought complete details from the US authorities. India has also decided to join hands with other countries to make these companies accountable to people who use their services across the globe.
