ISKCON Rejects Gajapati Maharaja’s Appeal on Overseas Ratha Jatra Dates

Date:

TNI Bureau: The long-standing theological and cultural debate over ISKCON’s practice of organizing Shree Jagannatha Ratha Jatra on unconventional dates outside India has reached a deadlock with the organization formally rejecting an appeal from Puri’s Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deb. The dispute centers on ISKCON’s practice of hosting the Ratha Jatra and Snana Jatra on dates that deviate from the traditional Odia Lunar calendar followed by the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri.

For centuries, the rituals of the deities have been conducted by precise astronomical events , tithis followed by the Hindu scriptures. The Snana Jatra is traditionally observed on jyestha Purnima, and the Ratha Jatra must commence on Ashadha Shukla Pakshya Dwitya. Reportedly for the last few years, ISKCON was commencing the Snana Jatra and Ratha Jatra according to their availability.

As the traditional first servitor and custodian of the Puri temple, Gajapati Maharaja has consistently opposed ISKCON stating that the dates are sacrosanct and non negotiable. Critics of the international practice, including the Odia diaspora and temple scholars, labelled ISKCON’s celebration as “Adinia Ratha Jatra” which means untimely.

In a frim response dated July 7, 2026, ISKCON Chairman Madhusevita Dasa communicated a categorical rejection of the Gajapati’s request. The letter stated: “There is no more to add, and therefore we respectfully bow out of this discussion once and for all.” This conclusive statement signals ISKCON’s unwavering commitment to its previous resolution, ignoring the religious sentiments of millions of Jagannatha devotees. ISKCON stated that, it’s motive is to spread devotion to lord Jagannath to global audiences who are unable to visit Puri Jagannath Temple. The organisation highlighted that they are being practical by navigating stringent municipal laws, securing police permits, and ensuring public safety often necessitate scheduling events on weekends or peak summer months, rather than the specific lunar date.

The Gajapati Maharaja has formally appealed to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking state-level protection for the sanctity of these centuries-old traditions. With the dialogue between the two parties are now officially close but it is expected to further deepen the rift between the international organization and traditional followers of the Mahaprabhu Jagannatha.
