India snubs Pakistan; puts Indus Waters Treaty In Abeyance

Date:

TNI Bureau: The Indian government has responded to Pakistan’s threat on the suspended Indus Water Treaty during a weekly press briefing in New Delhi on Friday, 3rd July. During the session, the spokesperson for Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal addressed the ongoing conflict between the two countries, India and Pakistan.

According to sources, he stated that “India’s position on the Indus Water Treaty is consistent. The IWT stands in abeyance in response to Pakistan’s continued sponsorship of cross-border terrorism. Pakistan must credibly and irrevocably abjure its support for cross-border terrorism,” Jaiswal said.

This statement came just days after Pakistan’s climate change minister Musadik Malikr issued a stark warning to India earlier this week over the water issue. He said that “India is using the water as a weapon, which is affecting our country.” He further mentioned that “The suspension of the treat was illegal and no party can unilaterally suspend or terminate obligations under a treaty that contains no such provision,”.

In response to that vitriolic remarks, India gave a direct and strong reply. India clarified that, the suspension is a frim reply to Pakistan for causing disturbance in India. As long as Pakistan sponser the cross border terrorism, India will continue to enforce diplomatic isolation and India’s position on the treaty will not change.

The Indus Water Treaty was signed on September 19, 1960 between India and Pakistan. It’s primary objective was managing disputes and cooperation over the rivers that cross both countries. India suspended the treaty as a direct retaliate measure after the 2025 Pahalgam Terrorist attack in Kashmir. Since then, it has remained a point of disagreement between the two neighbourhood countries.
