8.0 Earthquake hits Solomon Islands

TNI Bureau: A powerful earthquake, measuring 8.0 on the Richter Scale, hit the Solomon Islands on Wednesday, triggering a small tsunami. Several South Pacific island nations, including Australia and Indonesia are put on alert.

The quake struck at a place, which is located 340 kilometres east of Kira Kira in the Solomon Islands. The tsunami warning was issued for Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, New Caledonia, Kosrae, Fiji, Kiribati, and Wallis and Futuna islands.

No casualties or big damages have been reported so far. Solomon Islands were hit by a big tsunami in 2007, which left at least 50 people dead.
