The incident occurred at the Harimohan Ghosh College at Garden Reach area in Kolkata. Students from Congress-backed Chhatra Parishad (CP) and Trinamool Congress-backed Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) clashed with sticks and rods, while crude bombs were hurled inside the campus too.

Some anti-social elements present inside the campus resorted to firing. The cop was killed in the cross-fire. The students had gathered to file the nominations for college elections, as today was the last day for doing so.

The deceased cop was identified as Tapash Chowdhury, a sub-inspector of the special branch.
