TNI Bureau: In a significant move aimed at restoring public confidence in India’s examination system, the Union Cabinet has approved a draft Bill proposing stricter punishment for those involved in examination paper leaks. The legislation seeks to strengthen the existing legal framework by enhancing penalties and introducing fast-track courts for the speedy trial of paper leak cases.

The decision follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assurance that the government would take stronger measures to safeguard the future of students and ensure greater accountability in the examination system. The Bill is expected to be introduced in Parliament during the ongoing session.

While the government has not yet disclosed the exact provisions of the proposed amendments, reports indicate that the draft Bill seeks to increase the existing jail terms under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024, which currently prescribes a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to ₹1 crore for organised examination fraud. The proposed legislation is also expected to mandate fast-track courts for the swift disposal of paper leak cases.

The move comes against the backdrop of nationwide outrage over repeated examination irregularities and sustained student protests demanding transparency, accountability and systemic reforms. The Centre believes that stronger legal provisions and faster prosecution will serve as a powerful deterrent against organised cheating networks and help protect the future of millions of students.

The detailed provisions of the Bill are expected to become clear once it is tabled in Parliament.
