TNI Bureau: Legendary cricketer-turned-commentator Tony Greig passed away on December 29 at the age of 66. Tony was the former England captain, but had made Australia his home for years. Tony played a key role in changing the face of cricket in the 1970s.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), which did not see eye to eye with Tony Greig after he helped players sign contract with the World Series Cricket (WSC), has paid rich tribute to the departed soul. The Cricket Australia too condoled his demise.
Tony was a fearless cricketer, who always spoke his heart and mind without any bias. Born in Queenstown, South Africa in 1946, Tony played for Sussex and then became part of England cricket team in 1972. He was a genuine all-rounder. He was later made the Captain of the team.
After being signed by Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket (WSC), he was sacked as the Captain in 1997. He played his last test for England against Australia at The Oval. Later, he joined Channel 9 and did commentary for 33 years. Tony was diagnosed with lung cancer in October 2012. He breathed his last before his chemotherapy could begin.
