The Need for a Strong Regional Party in Odisha

Date:

In the present political scenario, the need for a strong regional party to safeguard Odisha’s interests has become increasingly evident. After ruling the state for 24 years, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) lost power in the 2024 general elections, paving the way for the BJP to assume governance. However, both the BJP and the Congress are national parties whose decisions are largely shaped at the national level. In contrast, a regional party has the resolve and flexibility to fight exclusively for state-specific issues and priorities.

After the demise of legendary leader Biju Patnaik, there was a clear debate within the Janata Dal—whether to align with a national party like the BJP or to form a strong regional outfit. The decision to establish the BJD as a regional force initially proved successful, earning widespread public support. Unfortunately, despite uninterrupted rule for over two decades, the party failed to build a second line of leadership. Over-reliance on a limited group and the absence of a clear successor weakened the organisation, leading to a steady erosion of public and cadre confidence after it lost power.

The recent Nuapada by-election exposed this organisational fragility. The lack of credible local leadership and forced candidate selection resulted in a humiliating defeat, even though the party’s top leadership campaigned extensively. This highlighted a deeper structural crisis within the BJD.

While national parties naturally follow directions from Delhi, Odisha today lacks a credible regional force that can assertively defend its interests. Issues like the Polavaram project or the Mahanadi water dispute demand persistent political struggle, something only a strong regional party can effectively undertake. However, these parties must fight for Odisha and Odisha’s interest, instead of looking for benefits or patronage or political alignment with the national parties.

History shows that regional parties in states like Tamil Nadu, Bihar, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh have successfully fought for their people’s rights. Odisha, too, needs such a platform. Though immediate transformation seems unlikely, the direction of time will determine whether the state can reclaim a strong voice of its own.
