TNI Bureau: Sujata Bhuyan from Sambalpur, Odisha, has emerged as a remarkable example of grassroots entrepreneurship after being praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the latest episode of Mann Ki Baat. Her journey from a homemaker to a successful fish farmer highlights the transformative power of determination and opportunity.
Starting her venture in fish farming at the Hirakud reservoir, Sujata faced multiple challenges, including weather uncertainties and managing resources. However, with perseverance and support from the Fisheries Department, she turned her small initiative into a thriving enterprise within just a few years.
Today, she produces 25–30 tonnes of fish annually and has achieved financial independence, earning lakhs and supplying produce beyond Odisha. Her success has not only strengthened her family’s livelihood but also inspired many women in her community to explore similar opportunities.
Recognising her efforts, the Prime Minister described her journey as a source of inspiration, showcasing how innovation in the fisheries sector can empower individuals and contribute to the economy.
