Maria Sharapova, who had won the French Open title in 2012, had no luck this time, as Serena Willims thrashed her 6-4, 6-4 in the final, which witnessed high-voltage contest at the Roland Garos.

It was Serena William’s 16th Grand Slam title. It was Sharapova’s 13th straight loss to Serena, who proved to be the former’s nemesis. She failed to retain the French Open title. Justin Henin was the last woman to do that in 2007.

In the semifinal, Serena had shown her power and intent, when she crushed Saran Errani 6-0, 6-1. She won the French Open for the second time. Serena had earlier won this tournament in 2002.
