TNI Bureau: A major security scare unfolded in Jammu after a gunman attempted to attack veteran Jammu and Kashmir leader Farooq Abdullah during a private function, raising serious concerns about intelligence coordination and VIP protection protocols. The former Chief Minister narrowly escaped unharmed when the assailant fired a shot from close range before being overpowered by security personnel.
The incident occurred as Abdullah was leaving a wedding function. An armed man managed to approach dangerously close and opened fire. Members of the protection team reacted swiftly, restraining the attacker and preventing further danger.
Deputy CM Surinder Choudhary who was accompanying Farooq Abdullah, sustained minor splinter injuries. The attacker was identified as Kamal Singh Jamwal.
The breach has sparked questions about how an armed individual could get so close to a leader who enjoys Z+ security cover, which normally involves multiple layers of screening and surveillance.
Reacting to the incident, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah described the episode as a “very close shave.” He said his father survived because of the quick action of the security personnel who deflected the attack in time. Omar Abdullah also questioned how the assailant managed to bypass security checks and reach within point-blank range.
Security experts say the incident points to possible gaps in intelligence gathering and event-level security management. In a region like Jammu and Kashmir, where political leaders remain high-value targets, such lapses raise serious concerns about the effectiveness of existing security arrangements.
Authorities have detained the suspect and launched an investigation, but the incident has already triggered a wider debate on whether intelligence agencies and local security units are coordinating effectively to prevent threats to prominent public figures.
