TNI Bureau: A woman Block Development Officer (BDO) was allegedly attacked inside her office by a group of political workers in Odisha’s Kendrapada district, sparking concerns over the safety of women government officials.
The incident reportedly took place at the Rajanagar block office. According to official sources, more than 40 workers affiliated with the BJP, led by party leader and 2024 MLA candidate Lalit Kumar Behera, allegedly entered the BDO’s chamber and attempted to pressure her to comply with their demands. The officer, identified as Tilottama Prusti, was reportedly surrounded during the confrontation.
Sources alleged that Lalit Behera attempted to assault the BDO by lifting a computer from her desk, but she escaped unhurt after others intervened and stopped him. The entire incident was reportedly recorded by CCTV cameras installed inside the block office.
Following the incident, the BDO is said to have informed the district collector and senior administrative authorities. There was no immediate confirmation of police action at the time of reporting.
The incident has triggered political reactions, with the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) alleging a deterioration in the law and order situation in the state. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty, in a post on X, claimed that the alleged attack reflected the safety challenges faced by women in Odisha.
Reacting to the incident, Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Charan Das also condemned the alleged attack. In a post on X, he said, “I strongly condemn this incident and demand strict action against the accused. Odisha will not tolerate threats to women or the misuse of power to browbeat government officials.”
The incident has renewed debate over security arrangements for women officers working at the grassroots level, with calls for strict action against those responsible.
