Rahul Gandhi–Centre Face-Off in Parliament Over Indo-US Trade Deal

Date:

TNI Bureau: Parliament turned into a battleground as Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the Centre locked horns over the proposed Indo-US trade deal, exposing a sharp divide over economic priorities and national interest. What should have been a technical discussion on trade quickly transformed into a high-voltage political confrontation, reflecting deeper disagreements about India’s strategic and economic direction.

Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing critique, alleging that the government had negotiated from a position of weakness. He warned that the agreement could compromise India’s economic sovereignty by opening sensitive sectors without adequate safeguards. Raising concerns over agriculture, digital governance, and tariff structures, Gandhi argued that the deal risks placing Indian farmers and small industries under unequal global competition. He also cautioned that easing data regulations and trade barriers could weaken India’s long-term strategic autonomy in an increasingly technology-driven world.

“Modi Government has sold ‘Bharat Mata’, alleged Rahul using a harsher language. He also targeted the government, saying they should be ashamed of their act.

The Centre responded firmly, rejecting the allegations as politically motivated and misleading. Government representatives maintained that the Indo-US trade partnership is a forward-looking step aimed at expanding exports, attracting investment, and strengthening India’s position in global supply chains. According to the ruling side, closer economic engagement with the United States is not a compromise but a calculated move to accelerate growth and enhance India’s global influence.

Beyond the rhetoric, the clash reflects a larger ideological divide. The Opposition views the deal through the lens of protection, sovereignty, and domestic resilience, while the government frames it as a strategic necessity in a rapidly evolving global economy. Both sides, however, acknowledge the high stakes involved.

As debates continue, the Indo-US trade deal has emerged as more than just an economic agreement—it has become a symbol of competing visions for India’s future. Whether it ultimately strengthens India’s global standing or fuels further political contention will depend on how the promises of growth balance with the concerns of national interest.
