PNG Priority: Government Bars LPG for Households with Piped Gas

Date:

TNI Bureau: In a significant policy shift aimed at managing the ongoing cooking gas supply challenges, the Union government has decided that households with Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections will no longer be allowed to retain or refill domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders. The move is part of the government’s effort to ensure that limited LPG supplies reach households that have no alternative cooking fuel.

Under the new directive, consumers who already have a PNG connection will have to surrender their LPG connections. Oil marketing companies have been instructed not to provide new LPG connections or refills to households where piped gas supply is available. The government believes that this step will help streamline distribution and prevent unnecessary duplication of cooking fuel facilities.

The decision comes at a time when India is facing supply pressure due to global uncertainties and disruptions in the Middle East, from where a large portion of LPG imports originate. Since India depends heavily on imports to meet its LPG demand, any geopolitical instability directly impacts domestic availability and logistics.

PNG, supplied through pipelines in urban areas, is seen as a more stable and efficient alternative where infrastructure exists. By encouraging households to rely on piped gas instead of cylinders, the government hopes to reduce the burden on LPG distribution networks and prioritise supply for rural and remote regions.

However, the policy also highlights the urgent need to expand PNG infrastructure across more cities. Only with wider coverage can such a transition ensure convenience for consumers while strengthening India’s long-term energy security.
