The massive fire at a garment factory in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi has killed at least 289 people, while 25 casualties reported from the factory in the eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday night, confirmed Pakistani authorities on Wednesday.

Most of the deaths were caused by the suffocation as people in the basement were unable to escape after the fire broke out in a garment factory in Karachi. Officials said that the factories did not have emergency exits and basic safety equipments such as alarms and sprinklers.

Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf has expressed his grief over the deaths.
