Pakistan – A Nation at Odds with Its Neighbours

Date:

TNI Bureau: Pakistan’s troubled relations with its neighbours have become a defining feature of its foreign policy. From persistent tensions with India to uneasy ties with Afghanistan and periodic frictions with Iran, Islamabad appears locked in a cycle of mistrust that has isolated it regionally.

The hostility with India remains the most visible fault line. Decades after Partition, disputes over Kashmir and repeated allegations of cross-border terrorism continue to derail any meaningful dialogue.

Each diplomatic opening collapses under the weight of suspicion, leaving the region hostage to recurring crises. Pakistan’s western front tells a similar story. Relations with Afghanistan have deteriorated sharply over border disputes and militant safe havens. Even Iran, historically a cautious partner, has exchanged sharp warnings and occasional military strikes along the border, reflecting deep security concerns.

What makes this pattern troubling is that Pakistan’s tensions are not confined to one adversary. Instead, strained relations extend across almost all its immediate neighbours, raising questions about the direction of its strategic thinking.

No country can prosper while remaining at odds with its neighbourhood. Economic integration, trade and connectivity demand stability and trust, commodities in short supply in Pakistan’s regional diplomacy.

Until Pakistan shifts from confrontation to cooperation, it risks remaining a country surrounded not by partners, but by problems.
