TNI Bureau: In a significant milestone for Indian sports, Odisha formally marked its preparedness to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2028 as the ceremonial World Athletics flag was presented to Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar.
The flag was handed over by Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryavanshi Suraj, symbolizing the state’s readiness to host the prestigious global event. The occasion reflects Odisha’s growing stature as a major sporting hub in India.
Earlier, the ceremonial flag was presented in Poland to Ravinder Choudhry of the Athletics Federation of India and Sports Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia, marking the official transfer of hosting responsibilities to India.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister described the moment as “more than an event,” calling it a legacy milestone for the state. He said the flag represents “ambition, pride, and a promise to the world” that Odisha and India are fully prepared to deliver a world-class championship.
The hosting rights for the 2028 championships were formally announced in Poland by Sebastian Coe, signalling Odisha’s entry onto the global athletics stage.
The World Athletics Indoor Championships is among the most prestigious events in international track and field, featuring top athletes from across the globe competing under indoor conditions. Hosting the event is expected to showcase India’s evolving sports infrastructure, organisational capability, and commitment to excellence in athletics.
