In a statement released after facing widespread criticism, Dubey clarified that his comments were misunderstood and taken out of context. He explained that while speaking to the media last week, he had referred to the Nehru-Gandhi family and his views were mistakenly interpreted as remarks directed at Biju Patnaik.

“The statement was my personal opinion. My views on Jawaharlal Nehru were misconstrued as being about Biju Babu,” Dubey said.

Expressing deep regret, the BJP MP emphasized his respect for the legendary Odia leader. “Biju Babu has always been, and will remain, a towering statesman for us,” he stated, acknowledging Patnaik’s immense contribution to the nation and Odisha.

Dubey further said that if his remarks had hurt the sentiments of people, he sincerely apologised without any conditions. “If my statement has caused any hurt, I offer my unconditional apology,” he added.

The controversy had sparked sharp reactions across Odisha, with political leaders and citizens expressing strong disapproval over the perceived slight to Biju Patnaik’s legacy. Dubey’s apology is seen as an attempt to defuse tensions and reaffirm respect for one of India’s most revered regional leaders.

Biju Patnaik, a freedom fighter, aviator, and former Chief Minister, remains an iconic figure in Odisha’s political and cultural history, admired across party lines for his patriotism and leadership.
