TNI Bureau: The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has issued a formal notice to the Odisha government, seeking a detailed report on alleged rising incidents of atrocities against tribal women and police inaction in Mayurbhanj district and other parts of the state.
The notice, dated March 20, 2026, follows a representation submitted by Dr. Priyabrata Majhi and other members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD). The complaint highlighted serious concerns over incidents reported from Bahalda in Mayurbhanj, alleging failure of law enforcement to act promptly.
Taking cognisance of the matter under Article 338A of the Constitution, the Commission has directed key officials, including the Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary (Home), District Collector, and Superintendent of Police of Mayurbhanj, to submit an action taken report within seven days.
The NCST has emphasized that non-compliance within the stipulated timeframe could lead to the invocation of its civil court powers, including issuing summons for personal appearance before the Commission.
The move signals increasing scrutiny over tribal welfare and law enforcement accountability in Odisha, particularly in sensitive districts like Mayurbhanj. The development also adds a political dimension, as the complaint originates from BJD representatives, potentially intensifying the debate over governance and safety of tribal communities in the state.
The Commission’s intervention is expected to put pressure on the state administration to ensure transparency, swift investigation, and accountability in cases involving vulnerable tribal populations.
