TNI Bureau: India had a mixed day at London Olympics yesterday. Woman boxer Mary Kom assured herself of a medal, as she stormed into the semifinals. However, Beijing Olympics bronze medalist Vijender Singh crashed out with a shocking loss in the quarterfinals.
Mary Kom beat Maroua Rahali of Tunisia 15-6 in the 51kg fly weight category in a lope-sided contest. She will take on Briton Nicola Adams in the semifinal on Wednesday.
India’s medal hopes took a severe beating, as Vijender Singh crashed out of the London Olympics. He lost to Uzbekistan’s Abbos Atoev in the quarterfinal 13-17.
India’s discus thrower Vikas Gowda made history, as he became the seventh Indian athlete in Olympic history to qualify for the finals of any event. Vikas led his group with a throw of 65.20, but finished fifth overall. The finals will be held today.
