TNI Bureau: Senior IPS officer Rakesh Aggarwal has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), according to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry.
A 1994-batch IPS officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre, Aggarwal was serving as the Special Director General of the NIA prior to his elevation. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment as DG, NIA, until August 31, 2028, the date of his retirement, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Aggarwal holds a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a master’s degree in management. With nearly three decades of service, he has held several key positions and is regarded for his administrative acumen and expertise in security-related matters.
He replaces Sadanand Date, who has been prematurely transferred back to Maharashtra. Date, who was appointed Special DG of the NIA in September 2025, is expected to take charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Maharashtra following the completion of the current DGP’s tenure later this year.
