TNI Bureau: Fresh violence broke out in Manipur’s Ukhrul district following clashes between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga communities, leaving at least 21 houses gutted and forcing residents to flee.
The state government has suspended internet services in the district for five days, imposed prohibitory orders, and deployed additional security forces.
The unrest followed the alleged assault of a Tangkhul Naga community member at Litan village on Saturday night. Although the issue was initially to be resolved through customary means, the meeting did not take place, leading to a flare-up of tensions.
On Sunday night and early Monday, armed miscreants reportedly torched houses at Litan Sareikhong village and fired shots in the air, prompting people to move to safer areas, including neighbouring Kangpokpi district. Houses belonging to both Tangkhul Naga and Kuki communities were affected.
State Minister Govindas Konthoujam said the situation remains tense but under control. Deputy Chief Minister L Dikho visited the affected areas and held meetings with leaders from both communities, urging restraint and peace. Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh also appealed for calm, stating that the incident arose from a misunderstanding and is now under control.
