Fireworks Factory Explosion kills 30 in Sivakasi

TNI Bureau: At least 30 people were killed in an explosion at a fireworks factory in Tamil Nadu’s Sivakasi on Wednesday afternoon. The authorities said that the death toll could rise as several people have been critically injured.

The deadly blaze broke out at the OM Cracker factory in Mudalipetti, about 70 kms from Sivakasi. Around 300 people were in the factory when the incident took place.

There were 40 rooms in the factory and most of them were the go downs for firecrackers and chemicals. As all the rooms were located on ground floor, many workers managed to escape.

Authorities said that the fire has been brought under control. However, it cannot be said exact number of people trapped inside the factory as the police and fire brigade personnel have not entered the building till the last report was collected, due to heavy smoke.
