Congress Condemns Police Action in Sijimali, Forms Fact-Finding Committee

Date:

TNI Bureau: The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee has strongly condemned the recent violence in the Sijimali mining region, alleging excessive police action during the ongoing protests. In a press statement, media department chairman Aravind Das criticized what he termed as “police repression” and emphasized that violence cannot lead to the success of any movement.

He stated that while the Congress remains committed to securing justice for displaced and affected communities, such goals must be achieved through sustained, peaceful struggle. Drawing a parallel with the Niyamgiri Hills movement, he highlighted how a prolonged non-violent protest led to the protection of tribal rights.

The party also accused successive governments of failing to address displacement issues arising from mining and industrial projects, alleging insensitivity towards affected populations and non-implementation of laws like PESA. Congress reiterated its commitment to standing with impacted communities, citing past movements in regions like Chhendipada and Erasama-Balikuda.

Following directions from OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das, a fact-finding committee has been constituted under the leadership of Koraput MP Saptagiri Ulaka. The panel includes senior leaders such as Suresh Routray, Tara Prasad Bahinipati, Satyajeet Gomango, Pabitra Saunta, Mangu Khilla, Yashwant Singh Laguri, Meenakshi Bahinipati, Ratnamani Ulaka, and Amita Biswal.

The committee is scheduled to visit the site on April 10, accompanied by Congress Legislature Party leader Ramachandra Kadam and other district leaders, to assess the situation and extend support to affected residents.
