TNI Bureau: The Ministry ofInformation and Broadcasting has directed the suspension of Television Rating Points (TRPs) for news channels for a period of four weeks, citing concerns over sensational and speculative coverage related to the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict.
In an official directive, the ministry instructed the television audience measurement body Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) to immediately withhold reporting TRP data for news television channels until further notice or for a maximum of four weeks.
According to the ministry, it has observed that some news channels are airing “unwarranted sensationalism and speculative content” while covering the conflict. Officials warned that such reporting could potentially create panic among viewers, particularly among those with family or friends in the affected regions or people residing there.
The government stated that the decision has been taken in the public interest to discourage irresponsible broadcasting and prevent a race for higher ratings that may encourage exaggerated or unverified reporting during a sensitive international crisis.
By suspending TRP ratings temporarily, authorities aim to ensure more responsible journalism and reduce competitive pressure on channels that may otherwise prioritize viewership numbers over verified information.
The ministry has clarified that the suspension is temporary and will remain in force for four weeks or until further directions are issued.
