Auto Driver’s Daughter tops Chartered Accountancy Exam
TNI Bureau: An auto rickshaw driver’s daughter in Mumbai surprised everyone when she topped the nationwide Chartered Accountancy exam in her first attempt. She created a milestone in the history of Accountancy by securing the highest percentage in the exam.
Born to an auto driver in a poor family, Prema Jayakumar (24) was determined to provide a comfortable life by doing a good job in her career. Her determination finally won and she cleared the exam with highest mark. The results were declared on Wednesday. She has scored 607 out of 800 in the CA exam.
Prema’s father Jayakumar Perumal hails from Villupuram in Tamil Nadu. He has been driving an auto for 20 years in Mumbai. This is the country where girls are still neglected and considered as burden on their family, Jayakumar proved it wrong. She is a brilliant student since her school days. She had outshone her friends and classmates in academics. She secured 90% in her B Com exam that she cleared from the University of Mumbai. She had stood second in her degree exam.
She was enrolled into accounting after successfully completing her M Com from the University of Mumbai. She is from poor family, but fees were never an issue for her in school and college. She managed to carry on her study after she got a scholarship and received money of Rs 40,000 from coaching institute.
She was a guiding force and mentor for her brother Dhanraj (22), who has also cleared his CA exam with her in his first attempt. Both brother and sister were registered with the Institute of Chartered Accountants and appeared for the exam in November 2012.
Praising Prema for her success, Tamil Nadu government has announced awards. Tamil Nadu Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan announced an award of Rs 5 lakh for her. He ordered the Ennore Port to release the amount from its Corporate Social Responsibility programme to the CA topper. Congratulating the girl, DMK president M Karunanidhi also announced a Rs 1 lakh award for her on her success.
