Sri Lanka in Semis, Australia Crash Out
Defending champions Australia crashed out of the ICC Champions Trophy without a single win. This is the first time Australia ended any ODI tournament with a zero-win record. Sri Lanka beat the Kangaroos by 20 runs to move to the semifinals. They will take on India in the second semifinal on Thursday. England will meet South Africa in the first semifinal tomorrow.
In the must-win game, Sri Lanka posted 253/8 in 50 overs. Dilshan (34), Thirimanne (57), Jayawardene (84*) and Chandimal (31) were the top scorers. Mitchell Johnson took 3 wickets.
Australia needed to win the match in 29.1 overs in order to qualify for the semifinals. They started on an explosive note, but lost five wickets for just 80 runs on board. They never recovered from that shock and bowled out for 233 in 42.3 overs. Maxwell (32), Voges (49), Wade (31) and McKay (30) were the top scorers. Kulasekara took three wickets, while Herath took two wickets. Jayawardene was declared “Man of the Match”.
