Odisha Mourns Demise of Veteran Cinematographer Dillip Ray

TNI Bureau: Odisha is mourning the demise of veteran cinematographer Dillip Ray, a renowned figure in Odia and Bengali cinema, who passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar following a brief illness. He was 72. Ray breathed his last on Friday night and is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over Ray’s passing, describing it as an irreparable loss to the state’s art and cultural fraternity. In his condolence message, the Chief Minister said Ray’s outstanding contribution to the Odia film industry would always be remembered and conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family.

Born on July 27, 1954, in Kataka, Ray pursued formal training in cinematography at the Film and Television Institute in Bengaluru before embarking on a distinguished career in the film industry. Over the years, he earned recognition for his creative excellence and technical expertise behind the camera.

A five-time winner of the Odisha State Film Award for Best Cinematography, Ray worked on more than 80 Odia feature films, around 15 Bengali films and several Chhattisgarhi productions. He also made significant contributions to documentaries and television serials.

His notable works include Tisandhya, Baje Bainsi Nache Ghungura, Chaka Bhaunri, Ei Ta Dunia, Mamata Ra Dora, Majhi Pahacha and Bidhira Bidhana. Through his extensive body of work, Dillip Ray played a key role in shaping the visual language of Odia cinema and leaves behind a lasting legacy in the film industry.
