The incident occurred on Transport Depot Road near Brace Bridge when the roof of the structure collapsed while construction work was in progress. Reports said around 50 to 60 labourers were present at the site at the time of the accident.

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari reached the accident site along with several ministers from her Cabinet to review the rescue operation and assess the situation. 21 people had been rescued from the debris. He added that around 20 workers were still trapped, but rescue personnel had established contact with them.

Teams from Kolkata Police, the Disaster Management Group, civil defence, fire services and the Army are engaged in the rescue operation. Heavy cranes and gas cutters have been deployed to remove the debris and search for survivors.

Preliminary reports suggest concrete casting work was underway when the roof collapsed. The exact number of casualties and trapped workers is yet to be officially confirmed.
