Ayodhya Ram Mandir Faces Scrutiny Amid Donation Controversy

Date:

TNI Bureau: The Ayodhya Ram Mandir, one of independent India’s most significant religious and cultural landmarks, has found itself at the centre of a fresh controversy over alleged irregularities in the handling of devotees’ donations.

What began as allegations raised by Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav earlier this month has snowballed into a major political issue. Questions have been raised over the accounting of cash offerings and the management of valuables donated by devotees. Allegations by former functionaries and whistleblowers have intensified demands for transparency and accountability.

Responding to the growing controversy, the Uttar Pradesh government constituted a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) on June 13 to probe the allegations. Reports suggest that investigators have examined administrative procedures, recruitment practices and donation management systems, while digital evidence has also been collected. According to media reports, nearly 150 persons have come under the scanner, with action likely against some individuals.

The issue has triggered a political war. The Congress has demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge, while opposition leaders have sought greater transparency from the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. A legal notice and petitions seeking judicial intervention have also added to the pressure.

Supporters of the Trust maintain that it is an autonomous body and that the ongoing probe itself demonstrates the willingness of authorities to ensure accountability.

The controversy comes barely two years after the grand consecration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024. For millions of devotees, the temple remains a symbol of faith and civilisational pride. Yet, the current row highlights a crucial challenge, preserving public trust through transparency and efficient management.

As the SIT prepares to submit its findings, the nation awaits answers in a matter that touches both faith and governance.
