TNI Bureau: Bargarh MP Pradeep Purohit has demanded a high-level Vigilance inquiry into alleged corruption, poor construction quality, and irregularities in the tender process related to the Dhanuyatra Gate constructed in Bargarh district.
In a letter addressed to Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on May 27, the BJP MP raised serious concerns over the recent collapse and damage of the gate installed at Thana Chowk during last year’s Dhanuyatra festival by the Public Works Department (PWD).
Purohit alleged that the incident exposed gross negligence, use of substandard materials, and possible misuse of public funds. He stated that two persons were reportedly injured in the incident and warned that a major tragedy could have occurred had the collapse taken place during peak festival hours when thousands gather in the area.
Calling Dhanuyatra the pride of western Odisha and one of the world’s largest open-air theatre festivals, the MP said such incidents damage both public safety and the image of the state government.
The BJP leader further alleged widespread corruption and serious irregularities in the offline tender process under the Bargarh PWD Division. According to him, the use of offline tenders in high-value public works reduces transparency and increases the possibility of manipulation, favoritism, and collusion between contractors and officials.
In his letter, Purohit demanded an independent Vigilance probe into the construction quality of the Dhanuyatra Gate, the role of PWD officials and contractors, financial expenditure in the project, and alleged irregularities in offline tendering. He also sought a safety and quality audit of similar gates and public structures constructed across Bargarh district.
The MP urged the government to initiate strict legal and departmental action against those found guilty after investigation. He also recommended mandatory online tendering for major public projects to ensure transparency and accountability.
The issue has now sparked political discussion in the state, with the BJP MP indirectly targeting the previous BJD government over alleged corruption and administrative negligence in public works.
