EC Announces Rajya Sabha Polls for 24 Seats on June 18

TNI Bureau: The Election Commission (EC) today announced elections to 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states on June 18. By-elections for one Rajya Sabha seat each in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu will also be held on the same day.

The seats are falling vacant following the completion of the tenure of sitting members, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda from Karnataka.

Polling will be held for four seats in Andhra Pradesh, five in Gujarat, two in Jharkhand, three in Madhya Pradesh, one each in Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram, and four in Karnataka.

According to the EC schedule, nominations can be filed from June 1 to June 8. Voting will take place in the respective state assemblies from 9 am to 4 pm on June 18, while counting will begin at 5 pm.

The Maharashtra seat fell vacant after the resignation of Sunetra Ajit Pawar on May 6, while the Tamil Nadu seat was vacated following the resignation of C. Ve. Shanmugam on May 7.

Rajya Sabha elections are conducted through ballot papers in state assemblies, where MLAs act as the electorate.
