TNI Bureau: Alleging distress sale of paddy and maize, farmers of Nabarangpur district have announced an indefinite ‘chakka jam’ agitation from Today in four blocks—Umerkote, Jharigaon and Raighar.
The protesting farmers said the road blockade is aimed at drawing the attention of the district administration and the state government to irregularities in paddy procurement at mandis and the lack of proper price support. As part of the protest, farmers plan to block roads by placing paddy and maize at key locations.
BJD leader and former Member of Parliament Pradeep Majhi accused the administration of ignoring repeated complaints from farmers. He alleged large-scale irregularities at procurement centres and claimed that the authorities have failed to address farmers’ grievances, pushing them to intensify their agitation.
The farmers warned that if their demands remain unresolved, they will observe a complete district-wide bandh on December 29. Several farmer leaders from all four blocks were present during the announcement of the protest.
