The CBI had demanded death sentence for former councillor Balwan Khokkar (58), Girdhari Lal (68) and Captain Bhagmal (85). A Delhi court had convicted the trio of murder in an anti-Sikh riots case on April 30.

The investigating agency argued in the court that the three were engaged in planned communal riot and religious cleansing.

Soon after the verdict, protests erupted outside the court. The protesters demanded death sentence for the three convicts who were given life imprisonment.
