TNI Bureau: In a significant push to infrastructure development in Odisha, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of ₹447.11 crore for the upgradation of the Kurumpuri–Raj Khariar road section. The project spans 103.52 km across National Highways 353 and 59, covering key regions in Nuapada and Balangir districts.
The proposed upgrade is expected to transform a crucial interstate corridor that links the Raipur–Mahasamund region of Chhattisgarh with Odisha. Extending further towards Berhampur and Gopalpur Port, the corridor plays a strategic role in facilitating both passenger and freight movement. With this development, districts such as Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, and Ganjam are set to benefit from improved connectivity and faster transit.
A major focus of the project is road safety. The plan includes rectification of accident-prone black spots and the addition of paved shoulders, which will be particularly beneficial for two-wheeler riders who form a significant portion of the traffic in these regions.
Beyond connectivity, the upgrade is also expected to provide a boost to tourism. Improved road conditions will enhance access to popular destinations like Daringbadi and the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary, along with nearby scenic hill regions. This, in turn, is likely to stimulate local economies, create opportunities for small businesses, and strengthen regional development.
The initiative underscores the Centre’s continued emphasis on strengthening transport infrastructure to unlock economic potential in eastern India.
