TNI Bureau: Today is World Habitat day. The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day. It is being observed across the globe to reflect on the state of affairs in cities and towns with a focus on the basic human right of adequate shelter, urban services and urban mobility.. It also reminds the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.
The United Nations chose the theme of this year is, “Changing Cities, Building Opportunities.” Under this theme, UN-Habitat wants to underscore the need to plan the cities better. Many people believe “Cities are the engines of growth.” It is in the cities that many realise their dreams of a better life.
It is believed that unplanned growth of cities lead to chaotic development and urban sprawl, where as well planned cities can continue to afford opportunities to both the current and future residents.
On this occasion, various programmes are also being organised across our country to study the problems of rapid urbanisation and its impact on the environment.
