TNI Bureau: In a bold regulatory move, the Indian government has started a major crackdown on the popular messaging app, Telegram. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (I&B) recently issued a formal notice to the company demanding an action taken report within 15 days to explain how the company is planning to stop the serious issues.
Reportedly, the main reason behind the crackdown is to stop the widespread digital piracy and cyber fraud. For a long time, people have been using the Telegram app to share illigal information, stolen and pirated movies, webseries and other copyrighted videos for free. Due to which the Indian creator economy, film producers and distributors faced serious financial losses. Along with that the app has also become an open platform for cyber criminals to spread financial scam, illigal activities, and unauthorised videos by exploiting the app’s weak privacy features and compromising the safety of millions of users across the nation.
The clampdown began after the alleged NEET- UG 2026 question paper started circulating on Telegram before the exam, which created a massive wave of panic and anxity among the students and parents. Ahed of the crucial re- exam, the Indian government temporarily blocked the app in India which proves that the government won’t entertain anything that is compromising with the safety of the nation and it’s people.
To stop all these problems, the government has issued a stark reminder to the company. If the company wants to operate in India, then it must follow the safety laws and provide a proper plan to stop piracy. If it fails to do so, then it could face serious problems further or it may get banned. For smooth operations in India, the company needs to come up with a better privacy systems in place to automatically find a block illigal contents even before it starts circulating.
