When Rohit Sharma scored a record 264 off 173 balls to become the only cricketer to score two double hundreds in ODI and shattered the highest individual score in ODIs, he did not know that he contributed to a unique record that involved Indians only. Only three players have scored double hundreds in ODIs and they all are Indians. The coincidence is that they helped the team win by the same margin each time.

Double-Hundreds-India-ODI

It all started with Sachin Tendulkar, who scored the first double hundred of ODI history. Sachin remained unbeaten on 200* against South Africa in Gwalior ODI on February 24, 2010. India scored 401 in that match and bowled the Proteas out for 248. They won the match by 153 runs.

On December 8, 2011, Virender Sehwag became the second player in the history of ODI cricket to score a double hundred. He made 219 to help India post 418 against the West Indies in Indore. India bowled West Indies out for 265 and won the match by 153 runs.

Rohit Sharma scored his first double hundred (209) on November 2, 2013 against Australia in Bangalore, but the victory margin was different. When he scored his second double hundred in Kolkata on November 13, 2013, history repeated itself. He helped India post 404. Sri Lanka bowled out for 251 to lose the match by 153 runs.

The victory margin remained the same in all three matches when the Indian players scored double hundreds with the exception of Bangalore ODI in 2013.

The seven-match ODI series between India and Australia, has become a turning point in Rohit Sharma’s cricket career and provided answers to many complex questions that gripped Team India for years. India now have two solid openers, who hardly play any reckless shots or show complacency like Sehwag and Gambhir. With Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan at the helm of affairs, India’s batting line-up has become invincible on flat wickets.

The start provided by RohRohit1it Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan helped India chase down 350+ twice in a single series – an incredible world record. In addition, the team could pile up 383/6 in the series decided in Bangalore, thanks to the efforts of the duo. Rohit Sharma, who scored 491 in five matches, became the third batsman in the world after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag to score an ODI double hundred.

Rohit also hit the maximum number of sixes (16) in an innings – a world record in ODIs. His scores in the series, included 42, 141*, 11, 9*, 79 and 209. He not only guided the team to win the series, but also won the ‘Man of the Series’ and outsmarted Australian skipper George Bailey (482 runs) as the top run getter in any bilateral series.

Rohit never managed to cement his place in Team India despite possessing great talent and ability to score in tough situations until he got the opening slot. In the absence of Gambhir and Sehwag, he was promoted as an opener. And, there was no looking back after that. He has now become a dependable opener for India and skipper MS Dhoni.

The Indo-Australia series provided great platform to Rohit Sharma to showcase his talent and he did not miss that golden opportunity. Everyone thought Kohli and Yuvraj will shine in this series. Kohli did, but Yuvraj failed. However, Rohit Sharma overshadowed everyone not only with the number of runs he scored, but also with the 209 in the final ODI and the world record in hitting most number of sixes. He completed his victory with the ‘Man of the Series’ award. There is little doubt that it was a re-birth for him as a great cricketer India was looking for after Sachin Tendulkar’s retirement.

The Bangalore pitch turned out to be a nightmare for the bowlers, particularly R Vinay Kumar, who conceded 102 runs in 9 overs, with boundaries and sixes raining from both sides. However, India had the last laugh, as they beat Australia by 57 runs and won the seven-match ODI series 3-2.

Rohit1Riding high on Rohit Sharma’s 209 (158 balls), Dhawan’s 60 and Dhoni’s 62 off 38 balls, India posted 383/6 in 50 overs. Rohit broke several records such as third double hundred in ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar (200*) and Virender Sehwag (219), 1,000 runs in 2013, highest individual score against Australia and most number of sixes (16) in an ODI innings.

Chasing a victory target of 384, Australia started on a slow note and keplosing wickets too, but some batsmen produced brilliant performance to put thchase on track. At one stage, they were 138/6, but Haddin (40), Glenn Maxwell (60 off 22 balls) and Shane Watson (49 off 22 balls) made the difference. Maxwell scored his fifty off just 18 balls and equalled the record for fastest fifty by any Australian.

After that, it was the turn of James Faulkner, who hit the fastest hundred by any Australian, when he reached the century off just 57 balls. He added 115 runs (88 balls) for the 9th wicket along with Clint McKay, which threatened to take the game away from India. They started at 211/8 and nobody even imagined that Australia would reach 326 from that position in such a high-voltage game.

Australia finally bowled out for 326 in 45.1 overs, as Faulkner was the last man out at 116 off 73 balls with 11 boundaries and 6 sixes. Glenn Maxwell and Shane Watson hit 6 sixes each. A total of 38 sixes were scored in the match, which was a world record. For India, Jadeja and Sami took three wickets each, while Ashwin took two wickets. There was no prize guessing the ‘Man of the Match’ award – it was Rohit Sharma.

Rohit also won the ‘Man of the Series’ award for scoring 491 runs in the five matches of the series, which is a world record in a bilateral series. Geroge Bailey was the close contender, as he scored 478 runs in six matches.

Records crumble in the seventh and last ODI between India and Australia in Bangalore, as India head towards a massive victory and on the verge of clinching the seven-match series 3-2. Rohit Sharma produced the ‘firecracker show’ on Diwali to power India in this series decider.

Rohit Sharma, the ‘Rohit-Sharma-209Man of the Moment’ became the third batsman in the world after Sachin Tendulkar (200*) and Virender Sehwag (219) to score a double hundred in ODI cricket. He also broke the world record for maximum number of sixes in an innings with 16 sixes. The previous record was held by Shane Watson (15 sixes). India piled up 102 runs in last five overs.

Rohit Sharma also became the highest individual scorer against Australia in an innings. He made up for Virat Kohli’s loss through a run-out. Kohli (0) lost the chance to break Sir Vivian Richards’ quickest 5,000 runs in ODI. Sharma also completed his 1,000 runs this calendar year. Rohit had earlier scored 141 in Jaipur ODI and 79 in Nagpur ODI.

After being put by Australia into bat, India posted a mammoth total of 383/6, as Rohit Sharma scored 209 off 158 balls with 12 boundaries and 16 sixes. Shikhar Dhawan made 60, while Raina scored 28. Dhoni scored a quick-fire 62 off 38 balls. For Australia, Xavier Doherty took two wickets. The series is now levelled at 2-2. If India win today, they will take the series 3-2.

After the setback in the first ODI in Pune, Team India bounced back to complete a massive run chase – only second best in ODI history and win the second ODI in Jaipur to level the seven-match series 1-1. The pitch turned out to be a bowlers’ nightmare while batsmen made merry throughout.

Virat-Kohli-CaptainThis is the second highest run chase in the history of ODI, as Indian batsmen made light of the mammoth total of 359 posted by Australia. The Kangaroos had once failed to defend 434 against South Africa. And, they faltered this time in Jaipur ODI. The only record they had in this game – their five top batsmen scored fifties.

For India, Virat Kohli scored his 16th ODI and completed the ton in just 52 balls (the fastest ever by any Indian and seventh fastest in the world), while Rohit Sharma too hit 141* off just 123 balls. India achieved the target of 360 with 40 balls to spare!

Earlier, Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. They posted 359/5 in 50 overs. Aaron Finch (50), Philip Hughes (83), Shane Watson (59), George Bailey (92* off 50 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (53) were the top scorers. For India, Vinay Kumar took two wickets.

In reply, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan added 176 for the first wicket in 26.1 overs. Dhawan made 95 off 86 balls. Rest of the work was done by Rohit and Kohli, who added unbeaten 183 for the second wicket to seal the match in favour of Team India.

India reached 362/1 in 43.3 overs and won the match by nine wickets. Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 141 off 123 balls with 17 boundaries and 4 sixes. Kohli made 100* off 52 balls 8 boundaries and 7 sixes. Rohit Sharma was declared ‘Man of the Match’.

Sachin Tendulkar was out for a duck! But, Rohit Sharma played a blinder of 51* off 24 balls to take Mumbai Indians to the semifinals of CLT20 2013. Mumbai became the third Indian team after Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals to move into the semis. They defeated Perth Scorchers by 6 wickets.

Mumbai-IndiansIt’s a heartbroken story for Otago Volts, who just had one bad match yesterday against the Rajasthan Royals, which also ended their 15-match winning streak. But, they are out of the semifinals race despite being the most favoured team to win the tournament.

Mumbai won the toss and elected to field first. Perth posted 149/6 in 20 overs. Ashton Agar (35), Cartwright (28) and Sam Whiteman (51*) were the top contributors. Nathan Coulter-Nile took three wickets, while Pragyan Ojha took two wickets.

Mumbai Indians reached 152/4 in just 13.2 overs and won the match by six wickets. Dwayne Smith made 48, while Rohit Sharma remained unbeaten on 51. Kieron Pollard scored 23. Jason Behrendorff and Brad Hogg took two wickets each.

Mumbai took less overs to improve their run rate and leave Otago behind in the points table although both teams tied at 10 points. Rajasthan Royals topped the group with four wins from as many matches.
