TNI Bureau:  After a brief lull, Former Nabarangpur MP and Congress leader Pradeep Majhi is back in the news again with waging a war on the State Government.

During the Nabarangpur Bandh today in protest against police inaction on the rape and murder of a minor girl in Kosagumuda 12 days ago, Pradeep can be seen in a video, asking party workers to keep petrol and diesel ready to set vehicles on fire when they get directions.

Soon after Pradeep’s call, a car was set ablaze in Nabarangpur. Lok Sabha MP Ramesh Majhi has condemned Pradeep Majhi’s call for violence saying it does not suit his stature. “Pradeep Majhi is doing all stunt to remain in the news. That’s his modus operandi,” he added.

However, Pradeep remains adamant and threatened violence if their demands are not met. “I believe Gandhi, but ready to take up arms to protect our innocent women if the government does not give justice. I won’t mind if some say I believe in anarchy and not democracy. This is our fight against injustice,” he added.

With a lot of hard work and riding high on CM Naveen Patnaik’s popularity, the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) won maximum seats in Nabarangpur-Malkangiri belt in 2014 polls. Even, Pradeep Majhi suffered a shock defeat in Lok Sabha polls to a political novice like Balabhadra Majhi. The Congress was down and out in this tribal belt.

However, Pradeep did not give in and shot into limelight again by playing the ‘tribal’ or ‘adivasi’ card. Pradeep Majhi rattled and unsettled the government by doing recent agitation over Forest Rights Act (FRA), demanding land patta for tribals, leading the attack on forest office in Raighar, subsequent arrest and launching a six-day hunger strike inside Umerkote jail.

In a desperate bid to checkmate Pradeep’s march and silence him, his family was dragged into chit fund fire. Although it’s crystal clear that they did maize business with Seashore Group like all others and never acted as chit fund agents in the area, some vested interests have launched a tirade against them.

Different angles are being attached to this case to tighten the noose around Pradeep and his family. But, will it work? If the government fails to prove any charges, then their campaign would backfire and Pradeep would aggressively use the tribal card to project himself a martyr and derive political mileage from this controversy.

Earlier, the government asked all departments to accelerate all-round development of Nabarangpur district with the CM taking special interest. It clearly shows that the government is nervous and does not want to leave any stones unturned to make its presence felt in the district.

PottangiThe Naveen Patnaik-led BJD Government, which has been ruling the state for over 15 years now, has always talked about development and growth across Odisha, including the tribal districts. But, Cyclone Huhhud came up as an eye-opener for all. Despite being less effective in Odisha, the cyclone caused extensive damage in tribal districts such as Koraput, Gajapati, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur.

The wind speed was 180-195 km per hour in Visakhapatnam and other Coastal Andhra districts. Still, only 6,638 houses were damaged. In Odisha, the wind speed was just 60-80 km per hour, but it damaged 80,000 houses, as the government claims. That clearly shows how developed Andhra Pradesh is as compared to Odisha. Majority of poor people and tribals in Odisha are still living in thatched houses, while Andhra Pradesh has been able to built better houses for its people.

Yes, you can offer Re 1 rice and many other benefits to the poor tribals, but if you don’t give them the option of living in well constructed houses, your development claims will remain hollow talks only. The damaged cannot be undone. But, it is expected that the Odisha Government will take steps on a war footing to ensure pucca houses to the people living in hilly areas, as they are more vulnerable to natural disasters.

In its poll manifesto, the BJD had promised pucca houses to all people in Odisha. Hopefully, the real work towards achieving that goal, will begin at the earliest and the target would be completed without any delay.

By Hemanta Pande: In the recent weeks, an alleged photograph of Nabarangpur MP Mr. Pradeep Majhi, who is seen with two South Asian girls inside the water, is doing the round in a section of media. A huge uproar has been made by some BJD leaders over this issue, who demanded his resignation on moral ground. The question remains, even if the photograph is true, is Mr. Majhi accused of criminal activities that warrant his resignation?

pradeepMr. Majhi, who held posts such as Zilla Parishad Chairman and Indian Youth Congress Secretary earlier, had a tough time to get a ticket for Nabarangpur LS seat in 2009. He was targeted by the senior Congressmen in his own area, who did not want him to become the MP at the age of 32! They created a lot of hurdles in his way and even circulated some morphed pictures of Mr. Majhi in the Congress circle in Delhi, but that did not work out.  They also tried to question his educational qualifications to seek rejection of his nomination papers, but failed.

Riding high on his own image and charismatic abilities, Mr. Majhi countered the BJD wave in Odisha and defeated stalwarts like Damburu Majhi (BJD) and Parsuram Majhi (BJP) in the 2009 LS polls from Nabarangpur. In his district, he is known as the ‘One Man Army’, who fights the lone battle, but wins in the end.

When Pradeep was appointed as the President of Odisha Youth Congress, he was targeted by some vested interests within his own party, who did not want to see a young tribal guy from KBK at the helm. During his tenure, Pradeep faced much resistance, but worked with utmost dedication. During the Cabinet Reshuffle in October 2012, Pradeep Majhi was certain to get the nod, but again became a victim of dirty politics and was denied the berth at the eleventh hour.

The latest propaganda could be yet another attempt to demoralise Pradeep Majhi and put an end to his promising political career. Pradeep has vowed not to give up and fight it out. While commenting on this issue at the anniversary of a newspaper, KIIT Founder Dr. Achyuta Samant lashed out at the media for publicizing the private life of politicians and other eminent people. “What’s the harm in taking bath with female friends and accomplices in a river or swimming pool? Do we want to highlight such trivial issues, while putting the issues of national interest in the back burner?” he asked.

While commenting on the recent controversy, Bhubaneswar MP Prasanna Patasani said, “The MPs and MLAs are serving the people in the best interests of democratic structure of our country. As they are responsible for the people’s wellbeing and development, people should respect their privacy, dignity and self-respect”.

By Rakesh Gupta: To impart better and quality education to the schedule tribe children of our state, OMTES (Odisha Model Tribal Education Society) runs as many as 13 Ekalabya Model Residential schools in 11 educationally backward districts in the state. All these schools are founded by Ministry of Tribal Affairs, Government of India, but the state government takes care of running the schools.

The infrastructure of these model schools are designed with high class, which comprises vast area for schools, well furnished class rooms, separate hostels for boys and girls, well furnished staff quarters, computer labs with internet connection, huge play ground and what not.

One such school is situated at Hirli in Nabarangpur District. This ISO 9001 certified school has a student strength of about 400 students studying from class 6th to 12th. However, the future of this model school is at stake due to the uncertain future of the teaching staff.

Some teachers and staffs have been working in this school on contractual basis for last 9 years but there is no sign from the state government to regularize their posts. The Government of Odisha took a decision to regularize all the contractual teachers who have worked for 6 years, but OMTES is not implementing this decision to the Model school staff.

With the fear of the uncertain future, nearly 15 teachers have already quit the Model school’s job and joined as the Sikshya Sahayak under Mass education. Some other staffs, who want to leave their job are unable to do so as their age is baring them for any other government job. They are now in mental stigma about their future.

Under such circumstances where the future of the staff is uncertain, the future of the students can be understood. Hence, the government should regularize the contractual staff as soon as possible in order to fulfill the objective of model school and impart quality education to the tribal students.
