Superstorm Sandy strikes New York, New Jersey

TNI Bureau: The Superstorm Sandy struck the United States with full force, leaving at least 10 dead and several missing. The Hurricane Sandy, which was later downgraded to a post-tropical superstorm, has made a big impact on Maine, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey and New York.

Heavy showers with high winds were reported from 23 states in the US. 6,700 national guard commandso have been deployed in the rescue operations. At least 6,800 flights were grounded. Schools, colleges and offices remain closed in affected areas. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) will remain shut for the second consecutive day.

At least 50 million people have been hit by the superstorm. 2.2 million houses have reported power outage. Winds are brewing at 280km/hour off the East Coast. According to latest reports, subways and tunnels in New York have reported waterlogging. The total damage from Superstorm Sandy has been estimated at $10 billion.
