TNI Bureau: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has been named as the sixth most powerful woman in the world released by the Forbes magazine in its list of 100 women. Last year, she had ranked seventh in the list.
The list of ‘World’s 100 Most Powerful Women was topped by German Chancellor Angela Merkel for the second year.
Sonia is among the five Indian women in the list including Chairman and CEO, PepsiCo Indra Nooyi (12th), Cisco Systems Chief Technology and Strategy Officer Padmasree Warrior (58th), ICICI Bank Managing Director and CEO Chanda Kochhar (59th) and Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (80th).
Forbes said Gandhi the “one-time heir to the Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty”, successfully underwent a surgery last year and was “back in fighting spirit last month when she publicly reprimanded a fellow parliamentarian during session who had criticised her party’s handling of this summer’s rioting in Assam.”
The UPA chairperson was lauded for economic growth in India, but criticised for tolerating political corruption. She is the longest serving chief in Congress party. She rules India without holding any PM post in the government.
