Sarabjit Singh in Deep Coma after Attack in Pak Jail

Indian national Sarabjit Singh is in critical condition after being attacked by a group of prisoners in Lahore jail in Pakistan. He is in deep coma and put on ventilator. Doctors attending to him said that the surgery could not be performed till his condition stabilises.

Sarabjit was admitted at the state-run Jinnah Hospital in Lahore after being brutally beaten by at least six other prisoners at the Kot Lakhpat Jail yesterday. The next 24 hours would be critical for him, doctors said.

His condition was measured as 5 on the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), which indicates that the level of injury to a person’s central nervous system.

The Indian High Commission officials in Islamabad obtained access to Sarabjit in the ICU of Jinnah hospital.

Sarabjit was convicted for alleged involvement in bomb attacks in Punjab province that killed 14 people in 1990. However, His family members claimed that he was innocent and he was the victim of mistaken identity.

Earlier, his mercy petitions were rejected by the courts and former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. However, the outgoing government led by PPP deferred his execution for an indefinite period in 2008.
