TNI Bureau: Former Odisha Ranji cricketer Sanjay Satapathy was arrested by Mahila police late on Wednesday on charges of dowry torture. He was absconding over a month. His wife Swapna, who is a Civil Engineer, had alleged that she had been tortured by her husband for dowry. Sanjay is also accused of taking away his son Anshu from her wife.
It was also alleged that Sanjay was putting pressure on his wife and father-in-law to withdraw the case against him. He was arrested from his in-law’s house in Puri. Following his arrest, he was produced in a trial court on Thursday where his bail plea was rejected.
Swapna alleged that Sanjay and his two friends beat her at her paternal house. When her father intervened, they also started beating up him. They were drunk and abused her and her father. Sanjay was detained by Swapna’s neighbour when he tried to flee. Later, he was handed over to police.
However, police is still clueless about Swapna’s son Anshu. The whereabouts of the child could be known after Sanjay will inform the court.
Sanjay and Swapna had married in February 2011. Sanjay, who was awarded cricketer of the year in 1999 by the state government, was banned for a year by OCA in 2009 for allegedly making defamatory remarks against the association.
