Saffron Surge in Bengal, Mamata’s Decline & Window for Congress

Date:

From The Editor’s Desk: The political churn in West Bengal marks more than just a change in power—it reflects the completion of a political cycle. Just as Mamata Banerjee once led a mass movement to dislodge the Left Front, a similar wave now appears to have worked against her, with the BJP capitalising on a powerful “saffron surge.” Not only BJP secured a massive win, but also they ensured a shock defeat for Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur.

At the core of this shift lies strong anti-incumbency. After years in power, sections of the electorate showed fatigue, citing governance concerns, local-level issues, and an undercurrent of dissatisfaction. The BJP effectively tapped into this sentiment through disciplined grassroots mobilisation and a robust booth-level network. Hindu vote consolidation further strengthened its electoral gains.

The SIR (Special Intensive Revision) exercise also played a role in reshaping the electoral landscape. The removal of a large number of names, ranging from duplicate and outdated entries to disputed cases, combined with the extensive deployment of central forces, contributed to a perception of more secure and confident voting.

For Trinamool Congress, this defeat could have deep organisational consequences. A loss of momentum may demoralise cadres and create uncertainty among sections of its support base. In such a scenario, Indian National Congress could find an opening to re-establish itself, particularly among Muslim voters seeking a national alternative. The minorities who unequivocally backed Mamata, will see the Congress as saviour if Mamata’s decline continues.

Let’s not forget that Congress won two seats in West Bengal, and both are Muslims. Congress also get a good number of votes in Muslim populated areas despite being a non-entity in this election.

However, the opportunity alone is not enough. The real question is whether Congress possesses the organisational strength, leadership clarity, and political aggression required to challenge the BJP effectively in Bengal.

As Mamata’s influence shows signs of decline and the BJP consolidates its position, Bengal stands at a political crossroads. Whether Congress can convert this moment into a meaningful revival will shape the state’s next phase of politics.
