Political Crisis grips Pakistan after SC Verdict

TNI Bureau: Pakistan plunged into a deep political crisis after the Supreme Court of that country disqualified Yousuf Raza Gilani as the Prime Minister yesterday. Gilani was convicted in a contempt of court case after he refused to reopen the graft cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) accepted the verdict and has chosen Makhdoom Shahabuddin as the new Prime Minister of the country. The political crisis in Pakistan has raised several questions that need to be answered.

The political establishment in Pakistan is not happy about the judiciary’s intervention and may try to formulate laws to prevent the judiciary from disqualifying the Prime Ministers in such a manner. Fresh polls in Pakistan are very likely, as Zardari may try to facilitate Gilani’s return sooner than later.
