TNI Bureau: Call it a gimmick or a decision taken under pressure, the Congress-led UPA Government has rolled back the petrol prices by Rs 2 per litre across the country from midnight today.
The UPA Government has been under pressure from the Opposition, common people and its allies such as DMK, NCP, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress to reduce the petrol prices.
The oil companies had increased the petrol prices by Rs 7.50 (inclusive of taxes) on May 23, sending shockwaves across the country. They decided to roll back the prices by Rs 1.68 (exclusive of all taxes) today after the global oil prices declined further.
However, the Opposition BJP has denounced the s 2 per litre deduction in petrol prices and demanded a complete rollback.
