In a low-scoring game in Cardiff, which witnessed ups and downs throughout, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by one wicket and start their ICC Champions Trophy campaign on a relieving note.
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first. They could score just 138 in 37.5 overs. Sangakkara was the top scorer with 68. Dilshan made 20. For the Kiwis, McClnaghan took four wickets. Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum took two wickets each.
New Zealand had a tough time to chase down this meagre total and they almost lost it. However, Nathan McCullum (32) and Tim Southee (13*) won it for the team. New Zealand reached 139/9 in 36.3 overs. Guptill made 25. Malinga took four wickets, while Eranga took two. Nathan McCullum was declared ‘Man of the Match’ for his all-round performance.
