New IITs fail to impress Students

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), which is considered as one of the reputed and revered institutes in the world, no longer remains the hot destination for many students. For the first time in the history of the IIT, a large number of students refused to join the premier institution, forcing the authorities to go through a second round of allotments to fill up all vacant seats.

At least 769 students, who got a chance to study in the IITs, refused to join. Earlier, only the seats meant for reserved categories used to go vacant. But, this time, even general category seats lie vacant.

While the top IITs such as Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Roorkee are not facing such crisis situation, the new IITs failed to win the confidence of the students. Most vacant seats were reported from ISM-Dhanbad and IT-BHU (now an IIT). It can be noted that after the MIT and University of California, Berkeley, IITs are considered as the third best technology institutions in the world.

According to the latest data, the IITs started reporting vacant seats only from 2009 after the new IITs were opened across the country. Earlier, the IITs never felt the need to conduct multiple rounds of admission to fill up the capacity. Out of 769 vacant seats, around 50% are from reserved category.
