Narendra Modi under Fire over Malnutrition Remark

Date:

TNI Bureau: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi once again dragged the attention of his critics and Congress for attributing the malnutrition in girls to ‘beauty consciousness’.

Modi came under fire when he was explaining the challenge of malnutrition in Gujarat. Without expressing the concern over malnutrition in the state, he said that the women are beauty conscious that causes malnutrition.

The opposition Congress and his critics fumed over the remarks. Recently on the malnutrition, he had said, “Gujarat is by and large a vegetarian state. And secondly, Gujarat is also a middle-class state. The middle-class is more beauty conscious than health conscious – that is a challenge. If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they’ll have a fight. She’ll tell her mother, ‘I won’t drink milk. I’ll get fat’.”

Gujarat where most of the children under five were found short and weak, Modi’s answer could not be acceptable as the five-year-old girls do not know anything about figure and fashion.

The Congress lashed out at Modi’s remarks saying, this is an insult to all women. Even Modi faced criticism for his remark from several people on the micro blogging site. One user tweeted: “I think we can blame Venezuela for Modi’s logic abt malnutrition in girls under five to ‘fashion consciousness’ (sic).”

Such criticism was not expected from Modi, who usually understands the things well and has taken several measures for the development of the state.
