TNI Bureau: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi made a hat-trick by sweeping away Congress in the assembly elections. The BJP won 116 seats, while Congress gained only 62 in the 182-member assembly. However, the party received a huge blow in Himachal Pradesh despite Modi’s campaign as Congress ousted the party gaining the majority.
The people of Gujarat gave thumbs up to Modi to remain in power for the execution of the developmental projects implemented by the party in the state. With the victory, his claim as the Prime Ministerial candidate of his party has brightened. The party was expected to win more seats. However, the saffron party could not cross the tally 117, the number of seats gained in previous election in 2007. It lost 1 seat as compared to previous elections held in 2007.
After the results were out, Modi visited his mother seeking her blessing to make Gujarat more prosperous and developed in the coming days. This is for the sixth time; the BJP won in the state and will form the government with the recent victory. However, it had to taste the defeat in Himachal Pradesh where Congress was voted to power.
Modi also visited GPP chief Keshubhai Patel, whose party gained only 2 seats, and offered him sweets. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa spoke to Modi on phone, congratulated him on victory. He recived best compliments from the Congress leaders too. Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal said “Narendra Modi does deserve congratulations for getting 2D victory through 3D campaign”.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal accepted his party’s defeat after Congress was seen leading in most of the seats. Expressing his displeasure over the results, he said that the party will discuss the reasons and analyse why they failed to win people’s confidence. BJP won only 23, leading in 3 seats.
Speaking to a news channel, Dhumal said, “I congratulate Virbhadra Singh and all candidates who have won. We will analyse why we were defeated.”
His son Anurag Thakur said, “Despite our good work, if we lost then it needs serious introspection. There were some problems with ticket distribution. There were problems with some districts that we were confident of”.
